Surgical Orthodontics

Surgical orthodontics, also called orthognathic surgery, corrects severe cases involving bad bites, jaw bone abnormalities, and malocclusion. Oral and maxillofacial surgery is one of the nine recognized dental specialties, and it focuses on complex craniofacial cases involving the mouth, jaw, face, and skull. If you need surgical orthodontics, your orthodontist will partner with an oral and maxillofacial surgeon to give you the best possible care.

When might surgical orthodontics be needed?

Surgical orthodontics is often used for adults with improper bites or aesthetic concerns. Jaw growth typically stops around age 16 in females and 18 in males, and the jaw needs to be done growing before orthognathic surgery. It becomes necessary when the jaws don't line up correctly and a proper bite can't be achieved with orthodontic treatment alone. The surgery aligns the jaw, and braces then move the teeth into their proper position.

How do I know if I need orthognathic surgery?

Your orthodontist will let you know if orthognathic surgery is part of your plan. Depending on how severe your case is and how your jaw is aligned, you may or may not need it.

How does orthognathic surgery work?

An oral and maxillofacial surgeon performs the surgery in a hospital, and it can take several hours depending on your case. Afterward, you'll have about a two-week rest period. Because it's a major treatment, we recommend planning some time away from work or school to heal. Once your jaw has healed, your orthodontist will fine-tune your bite. You'll wear braces after surgery, with most coming off within six to 12 months, and then a retainer helps maintain your new smile.

What are the risks of orthognathic surgery?

As with any major surgery, there are some risks. That said, orthognathic surgery isn't new, and it's been performed in practices and hospitals for many years.
