Life with Braces

Tips for Your New Braces

Discomfort

When you first get your braces, your teeth and mouth may feel a little tender or sore. That's perfectly normal, and we promise it won't last forever!

Salt Water Rinse Dissolve one teaspoon of salt in warm water. Swish, gargle, and spit.

Pain Reliever Over-the-counter medications like Ibuprofen or Tylenol can ease orthodontic discomfort. Please take them as directed.

Wax Your lips, cheeks, and tongue may feel irritated for a week or two until they toughen up. Use the wax we gave you. If you run out, we've got more! You can also grab wax at pharmacies or stores like Target.

Loose Teeth

If your teeth start to feel a little loose, don't worry, that's normal! Once they've moved into their new positions, they'll firm right back up.

Loose Wires and Braces

Damaged appliances can stretch out your treatment, so call us as soon as you notice something isn't right.

Sports and Braces

If you play sports, wear a mouthguard. And while you're in treatment, skip the boil-and-bite kind, use a mouthguard made for braces instead.

If a sports emergency comes up, please contact our office right away.
