Braces & Sports

Protecting your smile while you play sports is a big deal! One-third of all dental injuries are sports related, so keep those beautiful smiles safe with a mouthguard.

Even non-collision sports like basketball, baseball, soccer, gymnastics, and volleyball carry a risk of oral injury. So those players should wear mouthguards, too!

Mouthguards prevent more than 200,000 oral injuries every year.

Types of mouthguards

There are three basic types: the pre-made mouthguard, the "boil-and-bite" fitted mouthguard, and a custom-made mouthguard from your orthodontist or dentist.

Look for one that's tear-resistant, comfortable, well fitted to your mouth, and easy to breathe with.

Mouthguards for orthodontic patients

Because your teeth are moving, boil-and-bite mouthguards aren't a good fit during treatment. You'll want one made specifically for orthodontic appliances.

Taking care of your mouthguard

  • Clean it after each use with a toothbrush and toothpaste.
  • Store it in a protective case.
  • Keep it out of the sun and hot water, since heat can warp it.
  • Replace it at the start of every new sports season.
  • Replace it if it gets worn or stops fitting properly.
  • Don't wear a retainer with your mouthguard.
  • Don't chew on it or cut pieces off.
  • Feel free to bring it to your appointment, and Dr. Jones will check it for you.
