American Board of Orthodontics Doctor Certification
The American Board of Orthodontics (ABO) is the oldest and most respected specialty board in dentistry.
The board's mission rests on four main objectives:
- Evaluating the knowledge and clinical skills of graduates from accredited orthodontic programs through exams and time-limited certificates
- Re-evaluating that knowledge and skill through recertification exams across a Diplomate's career
- Supporting quality graduate, post-graduate, and continuing education programs in orthodontics
- Promoting and encouraging certification expertise around the world
Becoming Board Certified
To become board certified, an orthodontist passes a demanding set of written and clinical exams, plus a full review of their credentials. That first round can take anywhere from five to ten years. After that, the orthodontist recertifies every ten years to keep their board-certified status.
Board certification reflects an orthodontist's commitment to ongoing skill and excellence in the field.
